When a baby is born and placed on their mother’s chest, they naturally crawl toward her breasts to feed. In some places around the world, this is the only food available to them. Having fed from their umbilical cord for the previous nine months, they are simply accessing their external natural mechanism for life support.
Imagine if a mother was the only resource available for her newborn to feed and she denied consent to use her breasts. Would this be justification for killing her baby?
Most people would oppose a mother’s choice to starve her baby to death. They would feel crippling anguish watching her baby die and would take extraordinary actions to convince her to care for her baby. If she continued to deny her child life support, they would eventually force her to care for her child.
Yet if that same mother revoked consent for that same child to feed from their umbilical cord many of those same people would nod with approval and even cheer her ‘brave’ choice. They would claim she has a right to her body, that bodily autonomy trumps the life of a child. Unless, of course, that child can be seen and heard struggling for life.
This example shatters the idea that bodily autonomy justifies killing children through abortion. It exposes the hypocrisy and cruelty of those who believe that women cannot be free unless they have the right to kill their young.
If we continue to allow the atrocity of abortion to destroy our children, the day when being born is not enough will soon be upon us. Mothers should sacrifice for their children, not sacrifice their children, no matter where they happen to live.
