Our lives are governed by three powerful forces: conception, birth and death. They combine to form the arc of our very short time in this universe.

Our first, and most important transition, began with the cominglingling of our parent’s haploid gametes during the process of fertilization. This single event marked our creation from the void of non-existence. Every moment we have ever experienced or will ever experience is owed to this single event in the infinite expanse of time. The odds of winning the lottery are child’s play compared to the odds of simply existing.

Birth marked our transition from the microscopic to the macroscopic. After nine months of life cradled in our mother’s womb, we made our leap from a liquid world to open air, inflating our lungs with Earth’s atmosphere. Although this day only represents a change in location, not in being, we will forever celebrate its passing and someday engrave it in stone.

Death marks the third and final triad of life, the return to non-existence. As with our genetic code, our individual lifespans are unique. Some of us will live a short life and others a relatively long life lasting as much as a century. What we do with this time will define us, forging our legacy in the memories of those who follow us into and out of existence. Use your time wisely and protect the precious gift of life, even when it’s not your own.
