HOW WE STARTED
Our founder and President, John Lillis, (known affectionately as: The Skipper), is married and he and his wife have been blessed with seven children. It was the story that may not have been…
The Skipper is, in fact, a proto-survivor of America’s abortion-holocaust. He was given-up for adoption, in San Francisco at the end of August of 1967, some five-months after the California legislature passed the Therapeutic Abortion Act! His mother was the victim of (at least) statutory rape and through her own bravery and support of her family, she gave birth to him at the tender age of just 16.
This is personal.
Early in 2012, while working as a radio station manager in Sioux City, John worked with the local pro-life center to build and host America’s first-ever front-line pro-life radio show!. John led the construction team and together, they built a studio with a large picture window looking directly at the front door of Planned Parenthood some 25-feet away; the studio was built for the purpose of bringing tens of thousands of people together via radio to pray that the arriving women might change their minds and save their babies and that the doctors might stop killing and that the “mill” would be closed! While remodeling the pro-life center around the radio studio, he thought to himself: “Almost everyone loves coffee, why not marry my love for life with my near obsession for great coffee and see if we can’t create something to help sustain this place!” And that’s how the Lifeboat Coffee Co. idea was born.
THE COFFEE
When we started Lifeboat Coffee, we conducted a nationwide blind taste test of the top two coffee companies our team had narrowed down to from dozens who vied for our business. Today, not only do we serve “the winner,” but we also feature many Fair Trade, Direct Trade, Rainforest Certified, USDA Organic Coffees too. All of our coffees are purchased, cupped and roasted from the open-exchange and not from unethical sources.
THE ROASTERS
Our Ultra-Premium Line roasters are our family’s life-long friends right here in Arizona! Turns out the Skipper’s wife’s family grew up with a family that has been cupping, blending and roasting coffees for about 35 years! Wow, is it great!
We also feature coffees on the Family Gourmet Blend Line from a large, well respected roaster in New York state. They actually roast some pretty famous coffees and decided that they would work with us since their core “values” align with our own!
