Ireland’s constitutional protection of prenatal human beings is under assault. This is my open letter to those who are mounting that assault.

As an American who is literally surrounded by businesses that kill prenatal human beings for profit, I promise that you don’t want that for Ireland. Your great nation is a beacon of hope for human rights — for true human equality. As a species, we have struggled many times throughout our history to realize a world where all humans enjoy basic human rights. These rights begin with the right to life, the foundation all other rights are built upon. Your 8th Amendment codifies that idea…

“The State acknowledges the right to life of the unborn and, with due regard to the equal right to life of the mother, guarantees in its laws to respect, and, as far as practicable, by its laws to defend and vindicate that right.”

And so did America’s Declaration of Independence…

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Yet we have waivered in our promise. We have let our selfishness and fear drive the wholesale industrialized slaughter of our own sons and daughters. I urge Ireland to continue to stand strong on the moral high ground. I urge you to show the rest of the world that women’s equality can never be built upon the flawed belief that they must destroy their children to gain parity with men.
