Compare the nuance between these two signs. The difference is that one is inaccurate and one is accurate. It’s important that we use language carefully when referring to the prenatal members of our human family…

Instead of ‘expectant mother’ say ‘pregnant mother’.

Instead of ‘having a baby’ say ‘have a baby’.

Instead of ‘what are you having’ say ‘do you have a boy or a girl’.

Instead of ‘when are you due’ say ‘when is their birthday’.

Instead of ‘how far along are you’ say ‘how old are they’.

Instead of ’embryo’ or ‘fetus’ say ‘embryonic stage’ or ‘fetal stage’.

Instead of ‘unborn child’ say ‘prenatal child’.

Instead of ‘it’s a boy’ or ‘it’s a girl’ say ‘he’s a boy’ or ‘she’s a girl’.

Those in favor of killing children while cradled in their mother’s womb carefully choose language that avoids humanizing them. Those in favor of protecting these children while awaiting their birth must be just as careful to use language that will illuminate their humanity.

A plea to win the hearts of those who choose to dehumanize our development and undermine our right to live.
