Richmond, VA, June 12, 2014—The surprising upset of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in Virginia’s GOP primary is a warning to establishment politicians who compromise their pro-life base. Last year, Cantor introduced an amendment to the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act which excluded those conceived in rape and incest from the law’s protection.
According to inside sources, several national pro-life groups went along with the change simply to help the Republican party provide political cover for moderate candidates in tough primary elections.
“Cantor betrayed his pro-life base and became a symbol of candidates who compromise on the right to life,” said Keith Mason, President of Personhood USA. “When Cantor and some national pro-life groups began discriminating against children conceived in rape, the base was left thinking that the establishment pro-life movement is more interested in saving politicians than saving babies.”
On the same day Cantor was defeated in the Virginia primary, personhood won a landslide victory on the South Carolina primary ballot. Republican voters called for a personhood amendment to the state constitution by an overwhelming majority of 79%.
“The overwhelming personhood victory in the South Carolina primary demonstrates the grassroots desire for uncompromising pro-life efforts,” Mason continued. “Cantor’s loss shows what happens when the grassroots are ignored. It’s a message to the GOP establishment and to national pro-life groups who would provide cover to moderate Republicans.”
Cantor’s primary upset shows the need for new pro-life leadership on Capitol Hill that will not compromise the pro-life standard when endorsing candidates and legislation.
