Go into a quiet space and close your eyes. Now imagine yourself as you once were, curled up into the fetal position, linked to your mother through your umbilical cord. Imagine the sound of her heart beat, the feeling of floating around in amniotic fluid set at just the right temperature, the sounds of the muffled voices coming through her abdominal wall. Now imagine her cervix being artificially dilated and a sharp metal instrument invading your soft pink world. An instrument designed to cut you into pieces for easy removal through that tiny little hole.
That is how I deal with the hate and the threats. Because I know that I once lived on the other side of a woman’s cervix, just as my little sister once did. Fortunately, I was conceived and born prior to the legalization of human abortion – she was not so lucky. She was conceived shortly after the killing of unborn children was made legal. And like me, she was conceived by a still very young girl out of wedlock, with no support from her biological father. The difference that led to my birth and her abortion was the passage of an unjust law. A law and a culture that I will fight until my dying breath.
Be a lightening rod for the hate and never relent. If they drive you from one social media platform, establish yourself on two others. When they drive you from those, establish four others. Be unafraid, be unashamed, and most importantly, be unrelenting.
