“You will never abolish slavery. Even if it’s illegal, it will still happen. Wouldn’t you rather the slaves be kept in good conditions and fed by their masters, given roofs to live under and clothes to wear, and given a safe environment to do their work in? You can go on about the number of deaths, but there will be more through war if slavery is illegal, of the slaves and masters. Slavery will always happen, might as well keep it safe and legal.”
This kind of language was repeated over and over to abolitionists in the late 19th century as they worked to abolish another violation of human rights. And now? Slavery is illegal in all 50 states.
Silence in the face of oppression is consent. Not to side with those who are oppressed is to give their oppressors permission. I will never consent to nor give my permission for the slaughtering of innocent humans, whether it is legal or not.
