You don’t often hear us discussing bodily autonomy in the case of late-term abortions because in the MAJORITY of those cases, it is a wanted pregnancy that has gone horribly wrong. You don’t just get to five or six months and decide “gee, changed my mind.” The mother has already made the decision involving bodily autonomy – that she’s going to carry the pregnancy to term – but then a health condition is discovered that poses a risk to the fetus, mother, or both. That’s my take, anyway.
The ugly truth is that almost every third trimester abortion is done to kill a mentally or physically disabled child. In other words, these children are killed under a form of eugenics, something Nazi Germany did to their born children simply because they did not possess the medical technology to determine the genetic ‘acceptability’ of their prenatal children at the time. We have come so far.
Aside from this ugly truth, the point of my post was that most ‘pro-choice’ advocates don’t believe a mother should have the right to abort her child after six months of pregnancy just because she doesn’t want to be pregnant anymore. For those who argue for bodily autonomy, this is a hypocritical position and I have yet to hear a ‘pro-choice’ advocate defend a mother’s ‘right’ to kill her child after six months just because she doesn’t want to give birth anymore.
