Verity, a sculpture by Damien Hirst, affirms life by use of an allegory for truth and justice. The pregnant mother’s prenatal child is revealed as she stands defiant and strong, hiding the scales of justice behind her back.
Art allows for many interpretations. I believe the unbalanced scales show that the child’s life is not equally protected by the law while the mother defiantly holds a sword showing that she is strong and will fight to confer the right to life on the prenatal members of our human family. Her exposed child shows that there are two equally important living human beings deserving of protection from the injustice of abortion.
