But if I said I’d like to become a policeman, you wouldn’t bat an eye, even though the police theoretically do the same thing- save lives, occasionally by having to take a life.

The difference here is that as an abortionist, you would be taking innocent life.
As a police officer, you would be saving innocent life. The police do not intentionally kill the innocent, they kill the guilty.
Two people lie down before an abortionist, only one does so by choice.
