We must, and do, have a very capable safety net in place for those who stumble and fall. These programs are especially important for pregnant mothers and I fully support them.
Of course, we can only spend money we actually have to spend. Some like to attack those who attempt to balance our collective budget to ensure our nation does not go bankrupt, as so many cities have already done. It is extremely important that our social safety net remains in place. If our nation becomes insolvent, those safety nets will evaporate very quickly.
Never confuse a need to live within our means as an attack on these programs. Losing them completely due to fiscal insolvency would be an enormous human tragedy.
